On Tuesday, the US State Department highlighted the significance of guaranteeing the safety and security of every detainee in Pakistan, which encompasses former prime minister Imran Khan.
During the news briefing on Tuesday, State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller confirmed a meeting between US Ambassador Donald Blome and leaders of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), which included opposition leader Omar Ayub Khan.
Miller stated that Blome had discussions with the opposition leader and other senior members of the party to address a wide range of issues crucial to the bilateral relationship, such as the ongoing US economic assistance to Islamabad.
Regarding the talks with PTI concerning the rights and alleged charges against Mr. Khan, Miller restated the US position on political neutrality. He reiterated that the United States maintains a stance of not taking sides in Pakistani elections. Miller stressed the significance of upholding fundamental human rights while remaining impartial towards all political factions.
Furthermore, Miller commented on the reports of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s warning to Pakistan regarding the safety of imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan. He affirmed the US’s dedication to human rights and mentioned that Senator Schumer may have coordinated with the State Department in conveying the message to the Pakistani ambassador about Mr. Khan’s safety being a top priority in Washington, although he was not personally aware of that specific conversation.
He emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety and security of all prisoners, whether in Pakistan or any other part of the world. He stated that every individual, regardless of their status as a detainee or prisoner, deserves to be treated in accordance with basic human rights and provided with legal protection.
