The federal government of Pakistan has made the decision to seek consultation regarding the establishment of a regulatory authority for social media. Government sources have revealed that a dedicated committee within the cabinet has extended invitations to media organizations and other relevant parties to discuss the proposed amendment bill and the formation of the Digital Rights Protection Authority.
The federal cabinet recently discussed this matter during their last meeting, where the prime minister formed a committee led by Rana Sanaullah. The committee was tasked with reviewing the draft of the PECA Amendment Bill and reaching a consensus before presenting it in parliament.
Sources indicate that the establishment of the Social Media Regulatory Authority aims to provide guidance to the government on digital rights, responsible internet usage, and ensuring compliance with regulations.
During meetings with media organizations and stakeholders, the focus will be on fostering collaboration with social media platforms to create a positive digital environment under the proposed authority. Additionally, discussions will be held regarding the regulation of online content by the Digital Rights Authority.
Furthermore, the consultation will also cover the procedure for investigating social media law violations. Matters such as summoning witnesses and addressing individuals found guilty of violating social media laws will also be addressed.
The government believes that this bill is crucial for safeguarding the privacy of citizens’ personal lives from the threats posed by social media. The proposed PECA Amendment Bill 2024, which pertains to the establishment of the Social Media Regulatory Authority, will be presented in parliament.
