Advertising is a Waste of Resources – Group Discussion

Today our Group Discussion Topic was “Advertising a waste of Resources” which was among the selected topic for GD in Mu Sigma last year in our campus.
I want to start with the definition of Advertisement. It is something a promotional act that a company does to convey a message about the product and quality. Moreover sometimes company does the advertisement so that customer can recall the product quickly while he goes to buy this. So I totally disagree with the thought that advertisement is a waste. Indeed it helps the company to create brand value in consumers’ minds.

DOve India

Let me put through an example. Dove nowadays has a brand value. But it was launched just 5 years back. Then they did advertisement and invested a lot of money. They distributed sample through newspaper. And I am lucky I have got more than 2 times. They may have wasted their resources at that time but now they are earning it back. Now the same Dove is selling their in high price and placed itself into a recognized and elite brand after they brought Katrina for the advertisement.
There are many examples. I can give examples from every company for every brand. Now the question comes why advertisement again and again. So let me clear this too. Let’s take the example of Nokia Lumia. They run a huge campaign with Windows Phone to promote their models. They invested a huge amount of money and got positive response in Indian Mobile Market. Not if they stop promoting or advertisement in India, their sales would definitely go down. We have a new model every 2nd day. No one will remember Nokia Lumia after 3 months if they stop advertisement. Some another company like HTC, Sony, and LG will take the consumer’s mind and while purchasing a product consumers will recall Sony or LG quickly. So Nokia would like to lose its royal consumers. So they have to keep advertising. Though we do not have any machine or technique to calculate the profit through advertisement but it is definitely a necessary tool to get into consumer mind.

If you go to Indian Villages, you will find people asking for Colgate instead of Toothpaste. They will ask for Lifebuoy instead of bathing soap. Why? Because the advertisements have done its work. People can easily recall the product and company gets its advantage. Colgate from last few years is in the top most position in India Brand Value. So in my opinion before launching the product company has to invest huge amount to promote the product and after launching they have to put money regularly for ads to keep the product alive in consumers’ minds. Thank you!

Should Politicians Have a Minimum Qualification – Group Discussion

Today I was reading some articles or news in Yahoo.in. The title was “How educated are our Bollywood celebrities? – Yahoo! OMG! India”. I was moving around the slideshow, then the thought came into my mind about the “Education or Qualification of our Ministers”, who ultimately run the system. If a celebrity or say actor is 5th grade pass but good in acting that fair or acceptable but if a politician is 5th grade pass and he is ruling the country then we can dream what our future gonna be. So I decided this topic for Group Discussion.
Politics
Today, our group discussion topic is “Educational qualification for Politicians” or “Should there be minimum education qualifications for politicians”. Yes of course. I want to speak in favor of this topic. First thing, India is world’s 4th largest economy and every country keeps its eye on our development. Last decade we had witnessed a growth rate of 8% annually, which really surprised the world. We have the world’s best IT infrastructure, Agricultural Land and Natural Resources. But all are run and controlled by Government of India.
If GOI has such a huge responsibility then why should not be there any qualification for them? If a 5th grade pass politician becomes PM or FM, then what kind of decision he can make? Similarly a person having no knowledge about the Monetary Policy or Foreign Exchange becomes our FM and rule the country. A person having no knowledge about Indian People, Indian History, Indian Cultural and Indian States is going to become our PM. We should acknowledge the responsibility of these positions.
To being a peon of a Government Institution we need 10th or 12th class pass student but to rule or run this country we do not have minimum qualification. In our very first class of Organization Behavior, we were being tought about the qualification of a Manager. We were told that to become a Manger we should become a Good Leader, Speaker, Decision Taker or Maker, Good Knowledge about the subject etc. I do not see any kind of these qualities in few of our ministers, yet they occupy some top most position in our system. If President of India asks me to suggest, what I can do with this system I would like to suggest these points.
1. First there should be minimum qualification of Under Graduation for being a minister at Center.
2. To become a FM, the person should posse the necessary knowledge about IMF, FC, World Bank, Monetary Policy etc. Similarly, the become Home Minister, the person should have some kind of specific knowledge about the country. This rule can be applied to every minister.
3. Before taking oath of becoming a minister there should be 6 month training like we are having of IAS, IPS officers. In that training, the candidates should be trained about Indian Policy, Future Plans, Real Ground, Truth about Indian people, the condition of our basic infrastructure, why people have selected the person, what are their responsibility, what if they do corruption in the system, what if they do their duties honestly etc. Basically they should be taught about their responsibility. In this way, a faith towards democracy would become stronger. Candidates would understand their duties and will attempt to work for the people.
Why a soldier is always ready to die for this country: Because he is being well trained. He has been taught a lesson to protect the nation or to obey the order at any cost. He takes the bullet without a second thought, then why could not our politician do their jobs honestly.
4. There should be a public debate between the leaders so that people can know that their leader would like to do when a situation comes. Yes ofcourse we can’t organize public debate for every post but at least for the Core Committee like for PM, CM, FM, DM, HM, MHRD.
At last I want to conclude with my final words that few born with leadership quality like our freedom fighters had but now in this world where money speaks no one can remain untouched with a fact that is corruption. So to avoid this and to give our country into good hands, above practices should or must be regulated by Government of India.

Influence of Online Social Networks on our Youth – Group Discussion

Today our Group Discussion topic was – “Influence of Online Social Networks on our Youth / Effect of Social Media on Students / Social Media: Good or bad / Social network Boon or Ban”
I want to speak against Social Media. Social Media is completely wastage of time. We use to say that through social media we can get updates about our friends, from our surroundings and news from all around the world. Let me put one question. “Don’t you have digital newspaper? Is it necessary to see what you friends are updating every 5 second? Is it beneficial in any kind? ” I don’t think you will say Yes. People are becoming showbiz. They just want to show their social status and try to attract more and more people to like their pic and post. And we completely waste our time in reading and liking their post and pictures.
Social Media is bullshit.
People spend more than 70% of their day in looking at people profile and reading tweets, if they stay at home and have internet connection. I have real life example. Till 1st year we did not have internet. So we used to spend our time chatting with friends. We used to gather outside our rooms in the balcony and everyone used to share their struggle to reach this college and something interesting about their life. But after 2nd year, we hardly visit anyone’s room. We don’t have time. If our neighbor friend has been visiting Thailand, we come to know through Facebook.com. So this kind of situation has come.
Apart from this we can’t concentrate our mind on any work, if we are working on our pc and have internet. Our mind automatically forces to open and refresh Facebook page. It has become natural. Now Facebook is making their site more addictive by making it home page for mobile phones. Now people won’t have to open browser to see their friends update. They just need to slide the home screen of their phone.
I am not saying that it is completely wastage of time but for students yes it is. There are many evidences where social media have proved its importance. But for student’s life I don’t see any. So if I am asked to give suggestion to solve this matter I would say that, “Facebook should not allow students to register. Minimum age should be 22, because till then we become graduated and devote time to this kind of thing”. After graduation people can make their profile then they can connect with their friends, as they may have relocated after college. And that could be more appropriate rather than a friend makes some update and his roommate likes the post.
In my opinion through social media, the performance of students goes down. They could not concentrate on their studies. Surveys done by experts reveals that Social Media are now depressing the students and they don’t find social importance by their friends.
Many people use to raise question, “How would we be touch with our school friends?” The appropriate answer is that “If you become successful, they will themselves introduce to you. Don’t worry. You can have their email id. And after Facebook allows you to register, join them. Not a big issue as People you know is working fine. ”
So at last I want to say that the age limit bar should be raised to 22. We should enjoy our college life with our friends. We should be in directly contact with them rather than through social media. We should gather together and share experiences and knowledge instead of liking other’s posts or pictures.
