Islamabad:
The political committee of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) appointed Sheikh Waqas Akram as the new chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), replacing Sher Afzal Marwat.
After the recent progress, Marwat and Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) chief Hamid Raza are no longer being considered for the PAC chairmanship.
Imran Khan, the founder of PTI, initially put forward Marwat’s name for the position. However, the ex-prime minister later proposed Hamid Raza for the PAC chairmanship following criticism from the party leadership regarding Marwat’s nomination.
Last week, Omar Ayub Khan, the PTI Secretary General and Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, supported the appointment of Marwat, citing his endorsement by the party’s founder.
Asad Qaiser, Waqas Akram, Junaid Akbar, and Zain Qureshi were among those who opposed Marwat’s nomination and were actively advocating for the PAC chairmanship.
Furthermore, other senior leaders of the party also expressed their disagreement with Imran’s decision.
According to sources, PTI’s political committee convened in Islamabad on Friday night under the leadership of its new chairman to discuss the nomination. Out of the 19-member committee, nine voted in favor of Shaikh Waqas, while seven supported Marwat.
Marwat referred to the opposition against him as a ‘conspiracy by the PTI establishment’ and attributed it to his popularity.
