Philip Kotler defines marketing as identifying and meeting human and social needs. We carry a general perception of marketing as selling a product but it is not. Selling a product is just a part of marketing. Marketing covers identifying customers’ need, assessing them, bringing an innovative solution and then deliver it to the customer. Marketing department in a company is also responsible to do continuous research on understanding customer needs and keep an eye on competitors’ movements. Many times, big firms lose market to new start-ups as they take customers for granted and stop doing customer need or satisfaction analysis. The American Marketing Association defines marketing as: “Marketing is the activity, set of institutions, and process for creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society at large.”
